Fire Door Inspection

When it’s the only thing standing between you and a raging fire, a fire door is your first line of defence against disaster. Designed to restrict the passage of flames, smoke, and toxic gases, fire doors save lives and property. At ProCheck, we inspect, maintain, and certify fire doors to ensure their compliance with the law. We’re committed to delivering top-tier safety services for businesses throughout Mayo, Sligo, and Galway, Roscommon and Leitrim.

What Is a Fire Door?

An essential factor of a building’s fire protection system, fire doors are engineered to withstand exposure to flames, smoke, and heat. Constructed with hard-wearing materials such as steel and aluminium, they usually feature windows made of fire-resistant glazing. The self-closing devices on fire doors help ensure they close fully into their frames to hold back fire and smoke. Fire doors are built flush with the door frame. Sealants such as intumescent strips, which expand when in contact with heat, are used to fill any gaps.

Fire Door Applications

Whether it’s an emergency exit or entrance, fire doors are generally required anywhere they can help stop or delay the spread of smoke and flames in a building. They’re frequently positioned between corridors and stairways to provide safety for occupants leaving the structure and firefighters entering it during a fire. Fire doors are also utilized to protect service risers that allow vertical passage of pipes and cables. Storage rooms that house flammable liquids often have fire doors as well.

Legal Compliance

In Ireland, the Fire Services Acts of 1981 and 2003 and the Building Regulations of 1997-2019 form the legal backbone of fire safety. Regulations require fire door inspections at six-month intervals. Failure to comply with these regulations puts business owners at risk of fines, penalties, and even criminal prosecution.

Across Mayo, Sligo, and Galway counties, business owners may also need to ensure their fire doors comply with CE regulations. CE rulings dictate that all fire doors built for use within the European Union have features such as electrically controlled closing mechanisms, single-point locks, and single-axis hinges. At ProCheck, we conduct thorough inspections to ensure your fire doors comply with all applicable governmental regulations.

The ProCheck Inspection Process

The primary purpose of every inspection we conduct is to ensure that fire doors are serviceable, not damaged, and provide protection from flames, smoke, and gases in the event of a fire. To meet government regulations, we inspect each of the following components of the fire door for safety.

- Evaluate the self-closing device to ensure it closes fully into the frame of the door. Inspect the condition of the glass in the door panels to verify the glazing is fire-resistant.
- Confirm the door’s hinges are free of defects such as missing or loose screws.
- Examine the intumescent strips to ensure they make contact with the door edge or frame.
- Measure the gap between the door and side frame, which should be no more than 4 millimeters.
- Check the gap at the bottom of the door to ensure it’s unlikely to snap on the flooring.
