MEWP Inspection Ireland , Scissor Lifts, Cherry Pickers & Hoists
Procheck carries out MEWP inspection across Ireland for businesses that operate scissor lifts, cherry pickers, boom lifts, hoists and other mobile elevated work platforms. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 and the HSA guidance on MEWPs, a competent person must carry out a thorough examination of any platform used for lifting people every six months.
As part of every MEWP inspection, Procheck examines the full machine and issues a GA1 report on receipt of payment. Furthermore, we tag the equipment with the inspection date and next due date and keep a register for your records. We also schedule a reminder for your next inspection so nothing lapses. MEWP Inspection Checklist , What We Examine
Every Procheck MEWP inspection covers the following as a minimum, in line with HSA guidance and IPAF best practice:
- Structural integrity , chassis, boom arms, scissor mechanism and welds checked for cracks, deformation or corrosion
- Hydraulic systems , hoses, cylinders, rams and fittings inspected for leaks, wear and secure attachment
- Controls , ground and platform controls tested for correct operation, emergency stop function confirmed
- Safety devices , tilt sensors, overload protection, limit switches and guardrail interlocks checked and tested
- Outriggers and stabilisers , deployment mechanism, locking pins and ground pads inspected where fitted
- Tyres or tracks , checked for wear, damage, correct pressure and secure fixing
- Platform and guardrails , floor condition, gate operation, toe boards and handrails checked for damage and secure fixing
- Safe working load plate , confirmed legible, correct and securely fixed to the machine
- Labels and markings , all warning labels, operating instructions and manufacturer identification confirmed present and legible
Any defect is recorded in writing with a clear note of what the machine needs before returning to service. Procheck advises on repair or replacement and re-inspects on completion where required.

Pre-Use Checks and Daily Inspection
In addition to the six-monthly formal inspection, operators must carry out a pre-use check before every shift. This daily check covers controls, safety devices, tyres or tracks, hydraulic systems and any visible damage. Consequently, a defective scissor lift, cherry picker or hoist must never enter service. The operator tags it out and reports it immediately.
The formal six-monthly GA1 inspection by a competent person is separate from and additional to these daily operator checks. However, both are legal requirements and both need documentation. Procheck can advise on what records employers need to keep for HSA compliance.
Yes , the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 require a competent person to examine all platforms used to lift people every six months, so a current GA1 report for each MEWP is a legal requirement. Read the full legal breakdown here.
