MEWP Inspection Ireland — Scissor Lifts, Cherry Pickers & Hoists

Procheck carries out MEWP inspection across Ireland for businesses that operate scissor lifts, cherry pickers, boom lifts, hoists and other mobile elevated work platforms. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 and the HSA guidance on MEWPs, a competent person must carry out a thorough examination of any platform used for lifting people every six months.

As part of every MEWP inspection, Procheck examines the full machine and issues a GA1 certificate on receipt of payment. Furthermore, we tag the equipment with the inspection date and next due date and keep a register for your records.

In addition, we schedule a reminder for your next inspection so nothing lapses. Book a MEWP inspection with Procheck.

Why Choose Procheck for MEWP Inspection?

What Equipment We Inspect

Procheck inspects all common MEWP types used on Irish worksites — scissor lifts, cherry pickers, articulated and telescopic boom lifts, hoists, vehicle-mounted platforms and trailer-mounted platforms. Furthermore, if your business hires rather than owns its equipment, legal responsibility for inspection still falls on you as the user during the hire period.

MEWP Inspection — Legal Requirements

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 require a competent person to examine all work equipment — including scissor lifts and cherry pickers — at regular intervals. Specifically, a competent person must examine any MEWP used for lifting people every six months.

Furthermore, a GA1 certificate confirms the equipment passes inspection and is safe for use. The HSA can request these records at any time. Consequently, businesses without current GA1 documentation face improvement notices, prohibition notices and potential prosecution.

What Our MEWP Inspection Covers

Procheck inspects the full machine on every visit — structural integrity, hydraulic systems, controls, safety devices, outriggers, tyres, platform and guardrails, and all labels and markings. In addition, we check the safe working load plate and manufacturer details are legible and current.

After every inspection, Procheck issues a GA1 certificate and a full written report on receipt of payment. Any defect gets a clear written record of what the machine needs before returning to service. Request a quote from Procheck.

Pre-Use Checks and Daily Inspection

In addition to the six-monthly formal inspection, operators must carry out a pre-use check before every shift. This daily check covers controls, safety devices, tyres or tracks, hydraulic systems and any visible damage. Consequently, a defective scissor lift, cherry picker or hoist must never enter service — the operator tags it out and reports it immediately.

The formal six-monthly GA1 inspection by a competent person is separate from and additional to these daily operator checks. However, both are legal requirements and both need documentation. Procheck can advise on what records employers need to keep for HSA compliance.

Is MEWP inspection a legal requirement in Ireland?

Yes — it is a legal requirement for all platforms used to lift people, including scissor lifts, cherry pickers, boom lifts and hoists. A competent person must carry out a thorough examination every six months. Read the full legal breakdown here.

How often does a scissor lift or cherry picker need to be inspected?

A competent person must carry out a thorough examination every six months. In addition, operators must complete a pre-use check before every shift and a GA2 weekly record on construction sites. Find out more about inspection frequency and the three levels of MEWP inspection.

What certificate does a MEWP inspection produce in Ireland?

Procheck issues a GA1 certificate after every MEWP inspection on receipt of payment. This confirms the equipment passes thorough examination by a competent person and is safe for use. The GA1 is the standard certificate the HSA recognises for lifting equipment used to lift people in Ireland. Request a quote from Procheck.

Do I need to inspect a hired scissor lift or cherry picker?

Yes. Even if the hire company provides a recent inspection certificate, the hiring business carries legal responsibility for the machine during the hire period. If the six-month inspection falls due while the equipment is on hire, the user must arrange that inspection. Read more about the legal requirements for hired MEWPs.
