Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Ireland — Professional Servicing & Certification
Procheck carries out fire extinguisher maintenance for businesses across Ireland, working to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2007, Irish fire safety legislation and I.S. 291:2015+A1:2022 — the Irish Standard for fire extinguisher selection, installation and maintenance. On every visit, Procheck inspects all extinguishers, recharges or replaces units where needed and issues service records on receipt of payment, so nothing lapses. What You Get With Every Fire Extinguisher Service
What Fire Extinguisher Maintenance Involves
The Annual Fire Extinguisher Service
Under the standard, every extinguisher needs a monthly visual check and an annual service covering a physical inspection of the body, valve, hose, pressure gauge and safety pin. Procheck also checks weight or pressure to confirm the charge is intact, and flags any unit for recharging or replacement so your records and labels stay current.
Fire Extinguisher Maintenance — Discharge Testing Rotation
The discharge test runs on a one-third rotation — each year one third of your foam and water extinguishers are fully discharged, tested internally and recharged, and the same applies to CO2 and dry powder units, so every extinguisher completes a full cycle over three years. In addition, CO2 extinguishers require a hydraulic pressure test after ten years, though in practice replacement is often the more economical choice at that point.
Fire Extinguisher Service Records and Documentation
Every Procheck visit produces a written report and service records issued on receipt of payment, so you have the documentation your insurer and the HSA need before any query arises. We also keep a register of all extinguishers serviced at your premises and provide PAT testing, fire door inspections, ladder inspections and harness and lanyard inspections nationwide.

Fire Extinguisher Types — Choosing the Right One
Extinguisher Types and Fire Classes
I.S. 291:2015+A1:2022 requires the correct extinguisher type for the fire risks on your premises, since different agents work on different fire classes and using the wrong type can make a fire worse. Accordingly, Procheck checks correct type and placement on every service visit.
| Extinguisher Type | Fire Classes Covered | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Class A | Solids — wood, paper, textiles |
| Foam (fluorine-free) | Class A and B | Solids and flammable liquids — offices, retail, warehouses |
| Dry Powder | Class A, B and C | Solids, liquids and flammable gases — workshops, plant rooms |
| CO2 | Class B and electrical risks | Live electrical equipment — server rooms, offices with IT |
| Wet Chemical | Class F | Cooking oils and fats — commercial kitchens |
AFFF Foam Fire Extinguishers — Prohibition Notice
AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam) extinguishers containing PFAS/PFOA are prohibited in Ireland as of 3 December 2025 under EU Regulation 2019/1021, so any remaining stock must be removed from service and managed as hazardous waste. Fluorine-free foam is consequently the compliant replacement, and the EPA guidance on fire fighting foam restrictions sets out the steps to follow.
