Harness & Lanyard Inspection

Why Do I Need a Harness & Lanyard Inspection?

Harnesses and lanyards are essential for protecting workers from falls, but their safety depends on regular inspection and testing. Over time, exposure to sunlight, dirt, chemicals, and general wear can weaken the webbing, stitching, and hardware—making the equipment unsafe even if it looks fine. Regular inspections ensure that any damage or deterioration is identified early, helping to prevent serious injury or death. A certified inspection provides peace of mind that your fall arrest equipment meets safety standards and is fit for use.

Legal Requirement / Compliance

Employers are required under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2007 to ensure that all personal protective equipment (PPE) — including harnesses and lanyards — is suitable, maintained in good condition, and regularly inspected. Inspections must comply with applicable standards.

A ‘Ga3’ certificate is used by inspection bodies to show that a harness or lanyard has been independently inspected and complies with recognised safety standards. Having such a certificate demonstrates legal compliance and helps meet obligations under Irish health & safety law, reducing liability and helping ensure safe working at height.
