PAT Testing in Healthcare Facilities in Ireland

PAT testing healthcare Ireland covers a wide range of portable appliances in hospitals, GP surgeries, dental practices, nursing homes, and clinics. Furthermore, while medical devices require specialist testing outside the scope of standard PAT, every healthcare facility still has a significant volume of standard portable appliances that a competent person must regularly inspect under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007.

What Appliances Need PAT Testing in a Healthcare Setting?

Healthcare facilities use a broad range of standard portable appliances. These include computers, monitors, printers, kettles, microwave ovens, extension leads, phone chargers, and cleaning equipment. In addition, staff rooms, reception areas, administration offices, and canteens typically contain dozens of appliances that fall within the scope of Regulation 81 of the 2007 Regulations. Therefore, any healthcare employer must ensure a competent person tests these appliances regularly.

However, it is important to note that medical devices — such as patient monitoring equipment, defibrillators, infusion pumps, and diagnostic tools — require specialist medical equipment testing. Consequently, Procheck carries out PAT testing on all standard portable appliances within healthcare environments. Medical devices are outside our scope.

Legal Requirements for Healthcare Employers

Regulation 81 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 requires employers to ensure a competent person periodically inspects and tests all portable electrical equipment. Therefore, this obligation applies equally to hospitals, nursing homes, GP practices, and any other healthcare employer. Furthermore, the HSA can inspect premises and request records of testing at any time. Insurers may also refuse to pay out on a claim where testing has lapsed.

Under the same regulations, employers must retain PAT testing records for five years and make them available for HSA inspection on request. Moreover, Procheck issues a full written report and appliance register on completion of every job, giving healthcare facilities the documentation they need.

How Often Should Healthcare Facilities Carry Out PAT Testing?

Testing frequency depends on the type of appliance and the environment in which staff use it. Office and administration equipment in low-risk environments typically requires testing every one to two years. However, appliances in higher-risk areas such as kitchens or cleaning stores generally require annual testing. The HSA guidance on electrical safety at work provides a useful reference for determining appropriate testing intervals.

Additionally, Procheck sets a reminder for your next test date on completion of every job. Consequently, healthcare facilities do not need to track due dates themselves.
