Several situations require checks more frequently than every six months. Employers must bring forward the schedule in any of the following cases:

• Harsh or corrosive environments — chemicals, heat, UV exposure or salt air cause faster deterioration. Consequently, employers must shorten the inspection interval to reflect increased wear.
• Heavy use — equipment used daily by multiple workers wears faster than occasionally used items. The duty holder must factor this into the risk assessment and adjust the schedule.
• Manufacturer recommendations — some manufacturers specify shorter inspection intervals. If the manufacturer sets a service life limit, employers must withdraw the equipment at that point. This applies even if it passes visual inspection.
• After suspected damage — if a harness or lanyard suffers impact, snagging or suspected damage, a competent person must inspect it before further use.

Pre-Use Checks — Every Time

In addition to the formal six-monthly inspection, workers must carry out a visual check before each use. They check the webbing, stitching, buckles, connectors and energy-absorbing elements for damage or wear. However, a pre-use check does not replace the formal inspection. It is an extra layer of protection between scheduled examinations.

Employers must train workers to carry out these checks correctly. Any item showing signs of damage must come out of service immediately. Workers must report it for formal inspection.

Records Employers Must Keep After Harness Inspection in Ireland

Employers must record every formal inspection and keep those records for HSA inspection.
